Can an AI shopping agent check out for you?

Sometimes. A shopping agent can research and compare on its own. It can pay only when the product has a checkout path, a saved payment method, and a rule for who must agree.

On the pages checked for this guide, that rule is not the same in every app. Google's Universal Cart can take Google Pay at participating stores, or hand the items to the store's own cart. ChatGPT's current merchant page sends the purchase to the store's website or app. Amazon's Alexa for Shopping can buy inside Amazon when a price you set is reached, and it can place an eligible order on another store through Buy for Me. Microsoft Copilot Checkout and Perplexity Instant Buy can finish a purchase inside the assistant for participating merchants.

The short version: the assistant is allowed to act. The store still sells the item.

What is a shopping agent?

A shopping agent is a language model plus a harness aimed at a purchase. The model reads the request. The harness calls tools: a catalog search, a price check, a cart, and sometimes a payment. The agent is the working pair.

A chat reply that names three toasters is product advice. It becomes an agent when software can look up a live price, hold a cart, and either stop for a person or place the order under a rule the person already set. That boundary is autonomy. Suggesting a product is the low end. Paying with a saved card is the high end.

Google's Canada post on November 4, 2026 uses the phrase agentic commerce for the high end: AI that helps complete a task on a person's behalf, with that person's permission. The same post says Google's research found that 59 percent of holiday shoppers in Canada plan to use an AI tool to help them shop this season. That figure is Google's, from that post.

What is agentic checkout?

Agentic checkout is the payment step an assistant can carry out. The person has already chosen an item, or has already given a rule such as "buy this if the price falls to $75." The assistant sends the cart and the payment instruction. The merchant charges the card on the merchant's own systems.

Two open protocols show up in the primary pages:

Google's January 11, 2026 announcement introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol, UCP. Google says it co-developed UCP with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, and that more than 20 other companies endorsed it, including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and American Express. Google says UCP covers discovery, buying, and support after the purchase, and that it is compatible with Agent2Agent, Google's Agent Payments Protocol, and the Model Context Protocol. Shopify's January 11, 2026 post describes the same protocol as co-developed with Google.

OpenAI's September 29, 2025 post introduced the Agentic Commerce Protocol, ACP, built with Stripe. In that design the merchant stays the merchant of record, processes payment on its existing provider, and handles fulfillment and support. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said it was extending ACP so merchants can share product feeds for discovery.

The protocol is the shared language. The harness is the software in one product that decides whether a given tap is allowed to spend money.

Who remains the seller?

The pages below agree on the seller, even when the button sits inside the assistant.

Google's October 15, 2026 cart post says the merchant remains the seller of record, whether the person pays with Google Pay in the cart or transfers the items to the merchant's site. The person gets confirmation and customer support from the merchant. Google's Canada post on November 4 says the same about retailers.

OpenAI's September 29, 2025 Instant Checkout post says orders, payments, and fulfillment stay with the merchant. The March 24, 2026 post quotes Shopify's Mani Fazeli: Shopify merchants in ChatGPT complete purchases on the merchant's online store through an in-app browser.

Microsoft's Agentic Commerce page, checked November 4, 2026, says the merchant is the merchant of record and Copilot does not become the merchant of record. The same page says Microsoft does not take a commission or affiliate fee on Copilot Checkout transactions, and that payments run on the merchant's existing rails, with Shopify, Stripe, and PayPal named as examples.

Perplexity's help article on Instant Buy says the order and the payment are sent to the merchant for fulfillment. PayPal's November 25, 2025 announcement of that launch says the retailer stays the merchant of record.

Amazon is the exception that still names a seller you already know. Inside Amazon's own store, you are buying from Amazon's checkout. For Buy for Me, Amazon's article says the brand store manages delivery, returns, exchanges, and customer service, and sends the order confirmation.

How do current assistants handle the purchase?

The rows are what each company's own page says. A store named in a launch post is an example from that post, not a complete list of stores on November 4.

Assistant What the page says happens at purchase Who sells Where, and the source date
Google AI Mode and the Gemini app Universal Cart holds items from more than one store. Checkout can use Google Pay in the cart, or the items can move to the merchant's cart. In Canada, direct checkout is rolling out on eligible retailers. The retailer U.S. cart rollout on October 15, 2026, in Search and the Gemini app. Canada direct checkout announced November 4, 2026.
ChatGPT People compare products in the chat. Purchases finish on the merchant's website or app. OpenAI says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout. The merchant Merchant page checked November 4, 2026: shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the U.S. The course change is the March 24, 2026 post.
Alexa for Shopping It can add items to a cart for you to check out, buy when a price you set is reached, or place Buy for Me on an eligible product from another store. Amazon, for Amazon-store orders. The brand, for Buy for Me delivery and support. Amazon's guide updated October 29, 2026: U.S. customers, in the Shopping app and on Amazon.com.
Microsoft Copilot Copilot Checkout completes the purchase inside Copilot, on the merchant's existing payments, fraud, tax, and fulfillment systems. The merchant Product page checked November 4, 2026: Copilot.com and the Copilot mobile app. English-language merchants selling to U.S. buyers, in U.S. dollars.
Perplexity Instant Buy sends the order and the payment to a compatible merchant. PayPal's launch announcement powered that checkout. The merchant Help article retrieved November 4, 2026: users in the United States, except Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max. Launch announcement: November 25, 2025.

What did Google ship, and what opened in Canada today?

On January 11, 2026, Google said UCP would soon power checkout on eligible product listings in AI Mode in Search and in the Gemini app, for eligible U.S. retailers, paid with Google Pay. Retailers would remain the seller of record.

On October 15, 2026, Google said Universal Cart was rolling out in the U.S. across Google Search and in the Gemini app. The cart saves products from more than one retailer across those surfaces. Google says it sits on the Shopping Graph, "60+ billion continually refreshed product listings," and can notify a person about a price drop or an item back in stock. Checkout with Google Pay, or a transfer into the merchant's cart, was offered with merchants including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair, and many Shopify merchants.

On November 4, 2026, Google Canada said direct checkout powered by UCP was rolling out to Canadian shoppers on AI Mode in Google Search and in the Gemini app. Named participants at launch: lululemon, select Shopify merchants, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Simons. Payment uses Google Pay and shipping details saved in Google Wallet. Google says a simpler UCP connection inside Merchant Center starts next year. Loyalty rewards are described as later work.

Shopify's help page, checked the same day, describes its own direct checkout inside Google AI Mode and Gemini. Eligible stores must sell to customers in the United States, Canada, or Australia. Direct checkout is on by default. The shopper pays with a credit or debit card in a Shopify-powered checkout and does not have to open the store. A merchant can turn that off. Products stay discoverable, and the shopper is sent to the online store to pay. Shopify says there is no extra fee for this channel beyond ordinary payment processing fees. Subscriptions sold only as subscriptions, bundles, customizable products, and B2B-only products are not supported in that direct checkout.

Google Pay in Google's cart posts and a card payment in Shopify's help page are two implementations. A shopper should read the button in front of them. Both pages still name the merchant as the seller.

What can ChatGPT buy, and where does the purchase finish?

On September 29, 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout for U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users buying from U.S. Etsy sellers, with Shopify merchants described as coming soon. The post said a person taps Buy, confirms the order, and pays without leaving the chat. It also said merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases, and that the fee does not change the price or the ranking. Users confirm each step before an action is taken. Payment tokens are authorized for a specific amount and a specific merchant.

On March 24, 2026, OpenAI changed the emphasis. The post says: "We've found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we're allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery." The same post says richer visual shopping, including side-by-side comparisons, was rolling out that week to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. It names Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Wayfair as retailers already integrated into ACP for discovery. It also says Walmart was introducing an in-ChatGPT app with account linking, loyalty, and Walmart payments, available in web browsers, with iOS and Android to follow. This guide does not have a later OpenAI page that confirms those mobile apps shipped.

The merchant page checked November 4, 2026 is the current statement. Shopping is live for ChatGPT users in the United States. Shoppers discover and evaluate products in ChatGPT. Purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps. There are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. Other merchants apply. Apps inside ChatGPT are optional and aimed at larger merchants who want more control. The September 2025 merchant fee belongs to that earlier Instant Checkout description, not to the fee sentence on the current merchant page.

What can Alexa for Shopping buy?

Amazon's help page says Amazon is bringing Rufus and Alexa together into one assistant with shared memory. In the Amazon store, that assistant appears as Alexa for Shopping, on the Amazon Shopping app and on Amazon.com. The directory entry is Alexa for Shopping. The URL still contains the older name.

Amazon's guide, updated October 29, 2026, says all U.S. customers can use it. The guide describes several different permissions:

  • A question in the main search bar, a side-by-side comparison, or a price history for 30, 90, and 365 days. Nothing is bought.
  • A Scheduled Action that researches a repeat purchase and either notifies you or adds items to the cart. You review the cart and check out.
  • Auto-buy at a target price. The guide's examples include buying headphones at 30 percent off, or a shirt at $15 or less. Alexa for Shopping completes the purchase with the default payment method when the price is reached.
  • Buy for Me, for eligible products from other stores that Amazon is not selling. You tap the button. Amazon completes the purchase with your Amazon payment and shipping details. Amazon's Buy for Me article says that tap opens an Amazon checkout page where you confirm the address, taxes, shipping, and payment, and that Amazon then sends encrypted name, address, and payment details to the brand's site. The brand sends the confirmation and handles delivery and returns.

Auto-buy is the high-autonomy case. The permission is given earlier, as a price rule, and the later purchase uses the default payment method. Buy for Me, in the earlier article, still has a confirmation page. Scheduled Actions stop at the cart.

What do Copilot Checkout and Perplexity Instant Buy do?

Microsoft's January 8, 2026 Source post says Copilot Checkout was available in the U.S. on Copilot.com, with PayPal, Shopify, and Stripe, and names Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Ashley Furniture, and Etsy among launch sellers. The Agentic Commerce page checked November 4, 2026 is the better current description. Copilot Checkout is on Copilot.com and the Copilot mobile app. Eligible merchants are English-language merchants who sell to U.S. buyers, in U.S. dollars. The merchant stays the merchant of record. A product feed is required. Shopify merchants are described as automatically enrolled, with controls in Shopify admin. PayPal and Stripe are opt-in. Microsoft's own FAQ draws the harness line cleanly: a feed gets products into answers, and UCP is what lets checkout happen inside the assistant.

PayPal's November 25, 2025 announcement says U.S. users could check out inside Perplexity with PayPal, and that the retailer remained the merchant of record. Launch examples included Abercrombie & Fitch, Ashley Furniture, Fabletics, Adorama, and Newegg. That list is the launch list. Perplexity's Instant Buy help article, retrieved November 4, 2026, says U.S. users can buy from merchants compatible with the checkout, that the order and payment go to the merchant, and that Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max plans are excluded. It does not publish a fixed store list.

What is a product feed, and why does checkout depend on it?

A product feed is a file of rows, one per item the store will stand behind. OpenAI's feed spec says a discovery row needs nine fields: item_id, title, description, url, brand, seller_name, image_url, availability, and price. Availability has to be one of in_stock, out_of_stock, pre_order, backorder, or unknown. The minimal example on that page leaves checkout off. A column called is_eligible_checkout opts a row in only when checkout is already enabled for that integration. Setting the flag does not finish onboarding.

Google describes the same job inside Merchant Center. The January 11, 2026 post says new attributes cover questions shoppers ask, compatible accessories, and substitutes, on top of the existing product data. The October 15 cart depends on that Shopping Graph staying current. Shopify's help page tells merchants to keep the product data and the return policy in Merchant Center matched to the store, because discovery reads that feed.

A feed is how the assistant avoids inventing a price. It is also the limit. If the row is missing, stale, or marked out of stock, a careful harness has nothing honest to add to the cart.

How does checkout sit inside a harness?

The harness is the workshop around the model: tools, memory, permissions, and the rule for when to stop. A shopping harness uses that same list.

Tool use is the catalog search, the cart update, and the payment call. Orchestration is which system owns the next step. In these products the merchant owns the charge, the tax, and the shipment. The assistant owns the conversation and the handoff. A guardrail is the check before money moves: a tap to confirm, a price cap, a merchant allowlist, or a pause for a person. OpenAI's 2025 Instant Checkout post said the person confirms each step. Amazon's auto-buy moves that confirmation earlier, into the price rule, and then uses the default payment method.

Harness engineering here is deciding those gates on purpose. A prompt that says "buy the best headphones" is not a checkout policy. The policy is the code that knows the maximum price, the address, the merchant, and what to do when the feed and the product page disagree.

An eval is the test of that policy. This site's benchmark entry is the general idea: a measured check, not a vibe. For a shopping agent the useful checks are narrow. Did the charged amount match the approved amount? Did the item identifier match the feed row? Did the assistant stop when the item was out of stock? The harness comparison on this site stays empty until every cell has a source. The table above is a substitute with a date on each row, not a scoreboard.

What should you confirm before an assistant pays?

  1. Read who the seller is. On the Google, ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity pages above, that is the merchant. For Buy for Me, Amazon's article says the brand handles delivery and returns.
  2. Read where the feature is offered. The U.S. pages do not, by themselves, cover Canada, and the Canada post names specific retailers.
  3. Read what permission you already gave. A cart you still have to check out is a different grant from auto-buy at a target price.
  4. Prefer a feed-backed price over a sentence the model composed. If the product page and the assistant disagree, the product page is the one the store will charge.
  5. Keep the receipt path. These pages say the merchant sends the confirmation. Save that message. It is the record that sits outside the chat.

The shopping topic is the shelf for this guide. The harnesses topic is the shelf for the workshop around it. How agents work covers the loop in general. Agent frameworks are libraries for building an agent. They are not, by themselves, a store.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI shopping agent check out for you?

Sometimes. Google is rolling out direct checkout for eligible Canadian retailers on November 4, 2026, after launching Universal Cart in the U.S. on October 15, 2026. ChatGPT's merchant page says the purchase finishes on the merchant's website or app. Alexa for Shopping can auto-buy at a price you set, or use Buy for Me on an eligible product from another store. Copilot Checkout and Perplexity Instant Buy can pay inside the assistant for participating merchants. Each path is limited to the stores and countries named on that company's page.

Who is the seller when an assistant pays?

The merchant, on the Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Perplexity pages checked here. The assistant carries the cart and the permission. The store charges the payment method and owns the order. For Amazon's Buy for Me, the brand handles delivery, returns, and customer service.

What is the difference between a product feed and checkout?

The feed is the catalog the assistant is allowed to quote: an id, a title, a description, a product URL, a brand, a seller, an image, availability, and a price, in OpenAI's spec. Checkout is a second integration. A flag on a feed row does not turn payment on.

Does ChatGPT still have Instant Checkout?

OpenAI launched it on September 29, 2025. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said the first version was not flexible enough, and that merchants would use their own checkout while ChatGPT focused on discovery. The merchant page checked November 4, 2026 says purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps.

Is Alexa for Shopping the same product as Rufus?

Amazon's help page says Rufus and Alexa are being brought together. In the Amazon store the result is called Alexa for Shopping. It is available on the Amazon Shopping app and on Amazon.com.

Which countries are these checkout features offered in?

The pages checked here put Universal Cart, ChatGPT shopping, Alexa for Shopping, Copilot Checkout, and Perplexity Instant Buy in the United States, with the limits in the table. Google's November 4, 2026 post adds direct checkout for named Canadian retailers. Shopify's Google channel also allows stores that sell to customers in Australia. A launch list is not worldwide availability.
